Photosynthesis is how plants (and some bacteria) make food from light. To make it work, we will need both something to grab the light energy and something that uses the light to make food. In the picture, a wide mouthed funnel is used to grab more of the available energy. One part of the photosynthetic machine harvests light in a way sort of like this. Next we will need some sort of machinery to convert that light energy into useful stuff -- molecules that the plant can use for food like sugar or starch. When we make a mutation, we break part of the machine. If we break the funnel, the machine should still work, but it won't have as much light. If we break an important part of the machine itself, then the system will stop working all together and the cell will not be able to grow. Now let's make some mutants.
