"What do trees eat in order to grow from tiny seeds into towering trees? Water? Soil? Dina and Jake decide to tackle this mystery for a science project. The solution doesn't come easily. If trees eat mainly soil, there should be giant holes under large trees, but there aren't. But if trees don't eat soil, where do they get all that material trees are made of?
Dina and Jake enlist the help of Dr. Mildew, an eccentric science teacher, and his wrestling partner, a brown bear named Burpy. Dr. Mildew helps the two young scientists devise a hypothesis, set up an experiment, and interpret their results. Together they learn about the processes of photosynthesis and respriation, and discover where the substance of trees really comes from.
Straight from the Bear's Mouth, of course."
